I left work on my bicycle on Wednesday, and decided to add just a couple miles to the ride home. I cut through Calvary Cemetery and out to 78th and Center, then turned into Pipal Park. There were picnic tables in the shade on the west side of the park, and I took a half an hour to sit in the shifting sun and shade, to drink in the breeze and too-sweet coffee, and to revel for a while in the winsome airs of Faulkner's honeysuckle.
much peace,

Email to My Brother
Listening to Josh Ritter play his songs live on radio. Why this guy doesn't record all his stuff live in studio is beyond me.
Best songwriter I've heard in a long time, maybe ever.
Hitting the gym like crazy lately, and got the kids out for the first cold bike ride of spring on Wednesday. Radical shift in diet taking effect...Fresh spinach and mushrooms with almost every meal. No sweets at all for the last three weeks. On a path and turning the corner, physically, towards the athlete I have been and should be.
As always, thinking of you during all of these things. Most things I do, and the songs and poems I write, include pieces of Max and Will, Craig, Mom and Dad, and all my many brothers and sisters. I don't have space for all of you some days.
much peace,

Awake and Alive
It's easier to get up in the mornings knowing I have a bicycle ride ahead of me, and office work is more tolerable when I'm looking forward to my bike ride home.
This morning I heard bullfrogs creaking and croaking down by the Papio Creek, and the locusts were louder than I recall in previous summers. At 6:25 a.m., the edges of greenery along the trail diffuse into the late summer haze, and the eastern sky is still a tumbled confusion of color and cloud.
My shredded, then repaired, then re-shredded right knee aches in rotation, but my breath comes easy, my heart is steady, and my muscles burn like the good old days. I could spend a day concentrating on the rhythm of my quadriceps: fire and relax, fire and relax. Hypnotic, like the locusts and the slow-moving creek. I'm nothing but an extension of the scenery.
